Marsh Volunteer Collaborations: Phragmites Removal

07 September 2019, 13:00 - 16:00

Continuing our Marsh Volunteer Collaborations...

The Crosswinds Cache Crew partners with Wayne County Parks, the River Raisin Institute and the Stewardship Network - Western Lake Erie Cluster to host an afternoon of phragmites removal.

Join us on land or via water to help remove phragmites, a highly invasive species. Crosswinds Marsh features lush wetlands, a diverse array of rare plants and wildflowers, and an abundance of wildlife. Unfortunately, non-native plants and shrubs are crowding out the native plants. By clearing invasive species from the park, we are creating healthier ecosystems for our native species, and also demonstrating our appreciation of the park's support of geocaching.

Meet at the Geocaching tent at 1:00 PM.   Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and bring hand clippers (if available). All participants must complete a release form, and all minors should be accompanied by a guardian.

Afterwards, we will socialize, enjoy lunch (hot dogs & chips) and find some new caches hidden for the event.

Be sure to check out the Facebook event for up to the minute updates and information.

The Crosswinds Marsh Nature Interpretive preserve is providing a replacement wildlife wetlands for habitat that was removed by the Detroit Metro Airport expansion. Crosswinds Marsh Wetland Interpretive Preserve is one of the largest man-made wetlands in the country. It was built to replace the wetlands that were paved over to expand Wayne County's (the McNamara terminal). Wayne County, The area is managed by the Wayne County Parks.
