Please join us for the 13th CITO event at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on September 8th, 2018. The CITO Event Cords take you to the parking lot of the camp ground control station.

Superstutz and 501_gang have partnered with Camp-Mom Volunteers, who has coordinated this project with Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on an annual basis for geocachers.  The work that has been done by geocachers has been noticed by the NPS staff.  This is our 10th year of doing CITO events at for the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

We will be doing a variety of projects for Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Be prepared to work and please be flexible. Some of the past projects have included painting, mulching, trimming trees, clearing trails, eradicating invasive plant species, and working in the wetlands with plant restoration. In June of 2018 we worked out at the historic Chelberg Farms and Bailey Homestead which is part of the National Lakeshore.  If you can do any of that, then this project is for you. There may be a special project for all kids ages 12 and under, chaperoned by volunteer moms and park staff, depending on the number of kids. Or, the kids may be integrated into the adult work groups.  Equipment and gloves are supplied to volunteers and all projects are supervised by knowledgeable NPS employees.
After we complete our group projects, we will have a free lunch at the Headquarters Picnic Shelter provided by Camp-Mom. Rarely do projects resume after lunch, but all projects are expected to be completed by each group regardless.

Schedule:

7:30 AM - Meet in the Amphitheater, just inside of the control station by the Dunewood campground. We will have a sign-in sheet, volunteer forms to be signed, a safety talk, and information on all pending projects. Volunteers will be assigned to their work group. Please be prompt!

8:00 AM – 1 PM. Work on scheduled projects.

1 PM - ?  Lunch at the Headquarters Picnic Area. Lunch will be provided for all registered volunteers. Please be flexible with planning your activities, as we wait for all volunteers and staff to finish their projects and arrive at the picnic shelter. We don’t always exactly begin at 1 PM.

Please plan to work the entire time. When posting that you will attend, please note how many people you are posting for. The NPS requires a list of all those who volunteer in advance, so Please contact Superstutz with the legal names, as well as geocaching names, for everyone in your group and ages of those under age 18. Also, please indicate your gender. Consent forms are mandatory for all minor children who volunteer. The additional information is required for correct work group placement. You must be registered to volunteer and work to receive your free lunch.
Please note in the log if you are willing to do painting, mulching, trail restoration, or work in the wetlands. We can't guarantee which project you will be assigned to, but special consideration may be given if your preference is stated. It’s not what project you do; it’s how much work you complete in the allotted time within each group. Also, please be flexible as projects may vary or change according to current weather conditions. Everyone works rain or shine without exception.

If you plan to volunteer and would like to know more about camping in the Dunewood campground, please contact Superstutz for detailed information.

In the Fall of 2017, we had over 22 volunteers. We accomplished a lot in a very short time by working together as a team. The NPS staff praised our efforts and said that we once again exceeded their expectations.

Due to severe budget cuts this year, NPS need for volunteers is more essential than ever. Your participation at this event will be deeply appreciated by the INDU Lakeshore staff.  The NPS staff has noticed the work of geocachers and in the spring of 2017 the staff had placed several hides for geocachers.
