Jeepers-GasFree and Joyful Noise invite you to join them for a weekend of camping and caching. They intend to find most or all of the Silent Whistle Series - Abandoned Railroads of Newaygo County Geocache Rail Tour in a 3-day bicycle ride.

When: Camping event will run from 9:00 Friday evening, August 31 through 10:00 Monday morning, September 3.

Where: We will be setting up camp in site #32 of Diamond Lake County Park, Newaygo County.

What: Over the course of 3 days, we will ride approximately 120 miles with the goal of finding as many of the SWS - Newaygo County series as we can by bicycle.

Schedule of events:

Friday: Kickoff campfire at 9:00 pm - s'mores will be provided. Bring your own chair.

Saturday: 9:00 am departure from the campground for the ride. 8:00 pm campfire.

Sunday: 9:00 am departure from the campground for the ride. 8:00 pm campfire.

Monday: 10:00 am departure from the campground for the ride (pack up camp before departure).

What if I can't come for the whole weekend? You are welcome to join us for a day ride, or drop in for one of the evening campfires (campground visiting hours end at 10:00).

What if I'm not a bicycle rider or I can't ride that far? We will have alternate shorter suggested routes available. You are also welcome to join us in camping for the weekend and drive to the caches, or enjoy the area however you choose during the day.

Details of the ride: We are still working out the routes, but we are aiming for 3 40ish-mile days. One of the days will likely involve driving to a starting point or 2 to make loops to access the outlying caches. Suggested route maps will be provided (including shorter routes that omit some caches). The ride is not supported - you will be responsible for knowing your limits and choosing the distance you ride, as well as taking care of food, water, and any emergencies that may arise.

Camping details: We have reserved site #32 for ourselves, and as a meeting place. You will be responsible for making your own reservations through Newaygo County Parks. Because of the holiday weekend, a minimum 3-night stay is required. Rustic sites are $63 for the weekend, and Electric sites are $81. You will also need to purchase a Newaygo County Parks vehicle permit ($6/day, $30 annual).

Caching details: The Abandoned Railroads of Newaygo County Geocache Rail Tour, presented by the Newaygo County Museum and Heritage Center and Silent Whistles, was hidden in 2014. Each cache container has a milepost value which you will record on the Ticket to Newaygo County form provided by Silent Whistles. Find at least 28 caches in the series and send your form to Silent Whistles to earn your prize. We will have copies of the Ticket to Newaygo County available at the event. See GC58MBD for more details and a list of all caches in the series.
