I tried this a year ago with another cacher and failed on stage 1. Sooooo, I returned this year for another shot. This time I had a newbie john B with me. Stage 1 was found after expanding my circle. Stage 2 was easier and Stage 3 was easy too, although my GPSR had me off by 40 feet. But Stage 4 was a bear! We had almost given up and just then the owner and family jogged by, and newbie John saved the day and found Stage 4 at the same time! After that the end was easy and I got this one off my back!!! Thanks to John B!
Great to meet the owner and family, and now to thank him (them) for placing and maintaining this neat cache!!!

I finally began my assault on this cache, which I have been wanting to do for quite a while. I found the first three stages with relative ease, but stage 4 drove me crazy. Of course, I did manage to find Freddie's "others," notes of encouragement or taunting!  But I could not find stage 4 until I decided to ignore the comment in one of the "others" and looked deep and carefully into a certain spot; voila, there it was. I took down the coordinates and will be heading to the next stage later this week.....now I have to head for home to welcome visitors.

July 1 by MBWgaylord (part two)
Well, I came back today since my houseguest decided to delay her visit another day or two. I found the remaining stages without too much difficulty although the next to the last stage took a while to find. The stages were challenging, especially with the tree canopy making GPS reception a bit spotty, but overall, the coordinates were excellent. A couple of the stages were very hard for me to find and once I did, I retracted all the silent curses I had been thought-projecting to Freddie.  This is a great cache and it has clearly inspired subsequent challenging caches in Northern Michigan. Kudos to Freestyle Freddie for his pioneering work! I took the Green Jeep TB, left my signature card, SL. Thanks for the adventure!

Alden Historical Multi-Cache by AldenSearchParty

Had to make a trip to Alden today, so last night I read this cache and decided to do it today while in town. Well, I got there and found out I did not have it in my GPS or PDA. Made a couple of phone calls to see if I could get the starting coords. No luck everyone out and about. I remembered that I read the 1st stage was at the boat dock so I was already there and thought I might as well give it a look and may get lucky. Wife was checking out a couple of location and I went right to the 1st stage. Now I have something to go on to find the 2nd. After a short search, I spotted it and it was on to the final. Found it. Nice Multi. TNLN.  If you go into the museum , there is a blanket hanging on the wall. On it you will find my Great grandfathers signature. Geo Finch. And a lot of other names of families that lived in the area. He lived in the area from around 1870 to 1919. So the blanket was made sometime during that period.  Thank so much or the cache.

On the caching trail with BusYard, right after arguing about who got the last lemon blueberry muffin at the Muffin Tin. Nice place and their last day of the season. Cache hides were very creative and fun. Loved the final. I couldn't figure out how this one could be so obvious, yet so well camo'ed all at the same time. And the view is unbelievable. I considered a swim for just a moment, then tested the water. Nope, gonna have to wait.  T- purple travel bug. We figured it might need to get moving some. Will check its goal and see what I can do to move it along. (It's going to have to go soon, it keeps beeping at me here on my desk - some calendar timey thing is in it....that or it's homesick).
Thanks for a really nice walk around Alden. I like this town. Nurse Nanna

TreePlanter's Manistee River Trail Cache by TreePlanter

August 5 by MiTuCats
If Treeplanter had been watching, we're sure our search would have been a source of great amusement. It took us almost 40 minutes to find this simple hide. For one thing, there were a lot of great hiding spots.

Along the trail to the hide, we encountered a group of hard core hikers who had spent the previous night camped out along the trail. They were all carrying full backpacks, all had a least one hiking stick, some had two. They very courteously stepped off the trail to let us pass.

We had heavy cloud cover this morning and high humidity. We lost satellite signal several time along the trail and again when we got within about 20 feet of where the hide turned out to be. However, at that point, the GPS unit was pointing to a location 200 feet away and across the water.
At one point, it told us we were 20 feet from the cache, but then 30 seconds later was telling us we were 189 feet away. Between the canopy and the clouds, the darn thing just wasn't very useful today.

After much poking, prodding and peering into likely places, I had an inspiration and checked an area that had not been indicated by the GPS unit. (The GPS unit consistently had no signal here). Instead of a cache, I immediately spotted a crushed beer can lying there. So, I managed to drag it out and add it to our growing little collection of CITO items. I then tried another similar location and found a red lid off a travel mug. Again, I dragged it out and added it to the collection. After a while, we got wise and would set our CITO bag down where we would have to pass it on the way back to the car and left it there while searching, bringing items to it when we returned to the region.

Finally, after extensive searching up and down both river banks, up to the tops of the hills on both sides and along them for some distance, I returned to the place where I had found the beer can and took another look. Without the visual distraction, I found the cache quickly. We signed the log, left a Red Jeep Tb and a signature card and took the Cowbell TB. We were interested to note that the last person to sign the log was a muggle who stumbled onto the cache and had never heard of geocaching. They left 80 cents and sounded intrigued by the concept.

Thanks for leading us to a wonderful location that we never would have found otherwise. We loved the road into the cache, also. This sort of cache is why we started geocaching!

VERY CREEPY!! AND COOL TOO! I took lots of pics. What was this? Some sort of Cold War Military thing? LOTS of BIG ant hills here too. Thanks for the cache

May 4 by MBWgaylord
What an interesting spot! If only those old sidewalks and foundations could talk; they would tell tales of the men who lived there when it was a CCC camp 70+ years ago. I found the cache easily; it was a bit exposed so I freshened up the covering material. Of course I had to explore the area and spent a half-hour walking around its perimeter. Geesh, what could that locked cement box with the dire government warning have been? And why did I regret not bringing my boltcutters? I think I'll start an Internet urban legend; that locked box represents a mini "Gitmo North;" if Dubyah ever catches Osama Bin Laden, this will be the terrorist's interrogation cell. Who would ever guess??? Since this country is now into torturing its enemies, I'm sure that all those humongous red ant hills will be put to good use.  Man, I've never seen such anthills, in size and quantity, in Michigan. Anyway, this was a fun cache, thanks for showing me the spot.

Introduced my neighbor and his two boys to geocaching. The hike up wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. We parked within .16 miles, then had to bushwack 350 ft which wasn't that bad. We had a 6 and 7 year old with us. We went to "CSI: Peaceful Mountain" afterward which was about 5 minutes from here. Enjoyed the photos in the box, we recognized a few fellow cachers. Thanks for the adventure.

A nice hike up the hill. Very quiet out here, except for my panting. I am glad I brought water.
Also, I took out the water bottle out of the cache and some trash in there too. It is in good shape now.

What a BEAUTIFUL forest and a WONDERFUL legacy to leave behind for future generations to enjoy… wish we had more time to explore! Thanks for bringing us out. Setting a waypoint back to the car didn't work this time, lost satellites halfway back to the car and never got them back up. A good compass and sense of direction is what is needed here… good thing he had both! Found the cache at 4:24 PM. T. goldfish and "Piglet" floppy pen. L. new DVD + RW (re-writable) CD and "finger bowling". 10 of 11 Only one more to go and we're off to find the FINAL !!

May 25 by Team CoyChev
We're caching with Team Topkat as we're heading up to the Soo event a Day early in an attempt to tackle the CSI series.

This is our 9th cache find in the CSI Series. It's 7:30pm, so it doesn't look like we can get them all before dark anymore; it looks like we may not make it all the way, depending on where the final is.

We got out of the vehicles and took another good dose of DeepWoods OFF before starting our Journey down the blacktop road. I think deepwoods off is now pretty thick in my blood stream. I love how all the cache areas are unique in one way or another.

We figured out the coords and started to drive the area to find a closer path to the cache. We found a internal trailhead but not a good place to park so we kept driving. We soon found another trailhead. One third of our walk was through an open field on a mowed trail. We came to with-in 250 feet of the Final stage from this trail. The trail wasn't too visible as we walked along, we had to keep a good eye on it. We signed the log and got the Code needed for the final bonus cache.

Thanks CaptBud for taking us here. Donna says that this is the perfect way to memorialize a loved one; with trees!

With the snow finally gone, today was the day to tackle this multi. We got a fairly late start and found the first stage at noon. DD-ette spotted it while I was looking on the wrong side of the road. The first ? had us stumped, but we used phone a brother, who came through with the correct answer. Even with 4 wheel drive we took the long way around to arrive at the 2nd stage site. This ? also stumped us, so we used phone a geo-friend option #2. They also came through with the correct answer. We were on a roll. Stage 3 proved to be extremely difficult for me to retrieve, so DD-ette had to do the honors. The cell phone is getting a workout now, as it was used again here. Stage 4 was found "out of place", but at least we were able to figure out/guess the right answer. We also guessed right on the last ?, but somehow went to the wrong spot, and that container was a bugger to retrieve. The last stage took the longest to find, and when we did it was "out of place" too. Arrived at the final to find about 2 dozen turkeys guarding the site. Sat and watched them for awhile before heading out to uncover the well hidden container at 2:00. T-Golf Tees L-Sig Card, Spiderman, Kleenex and a Diabetes TB. Had lots of fun with this today and our new cachemobile got a great workout. Well done, Radman.

Sugarbush Cache by James & Sheryl

March 17 by Nurse Nanna
Once settled into the event YpsiChris and I decided we wanted to get started on this cache. I knew I was in for some teasing when James and Gary started picking on me before I even had my GPSr on and ready to go! Thankfully we were joined by Vanman_30 (accompanied by mini-van and Austin sleepyweasel in a wagon) and off we went on the road to adventure. It was quite an undertaking with a wagon and I felt a bit sorry for vanman pulling 2 kids in a wagon, but the biggest laugh I got for the day was when I heard Mrs. Vanman say that if Nurse Nanna falls on the ice then the kids would have to walk and they would put me in the wagon. I'm still laughing.
The walk through the woods is so beautiful as those hikes tend to be, but with good company it's just so fun and relaxing. The kids got tired of the wagon after awhile and I think that the workhorse might have been tired of pulling it, so the kids got out and walked it and we meandered back through the trail. It was slippery and slow, but we had a great time and it was worth every step. The search for the final was fun and with a large group it is a bit easier than if there were only a few, so we made short work of it. And the sweet reward is about as good as it gets. (I have been to the kitchen twice today and had a spoonful when no one was looking.) Yum.
The walk back was fun too, though it left me with one question. The sign on the bridge says "no diving". Does that mean that jumping is ok? Just asking. Not that I was tempted. I think Chris wanted to go for a swim, but we talked him out of it.
Thanks for the fun, and the education about the maple syruping. And for the great treat at the final!
Nurse Nanna, who stayed upright the entire trail (for a change)

Out on a Men’s GeoDay with Hysteria today. Hard to say enough good things about this one. First of all, it was an absolutely gorgeous day to be out on a GeoTour. Between stages 1 and 6 we were able to work in 3 other caches, 2 of which were in themselves multi-stage ones. We found each of these 6 stages within just 3 or 4 minutes of searching, as we tagged every one of them within 8 feet. All in all, it was just a flippin blast. The tour took us through a stretch of country that neither one of us had ever been through, including a stretch of some of the prettiest lakes that we’ve seen anywhere. We had a shore lunch and brew at stage 3, but for those that are not as prepared; there is a nearby “watering hole”. When color season gets here I am going to bring the 1st Mate down here and repeat this same tour. I took a Chip Clip and the T.B. MLS Soccer Ball. Left a Pair Of Turtles Figure, and one of my Fridge Magnets. Thanks Much to DaDuo for this Cache –

Out snowmobiling with part of our "cabin crew" on this great afternoon. After a campfire lunch along Canyon Creek we were only 2.34 miles away so off we went. Per usual our approach was not the easiest route as we entered the area from the S. Terrain was much more difficult than a 1.5, but the site was less than 300' away, and that was part of the fun. Probably wouldn't be able (or want) to go this way during the non semi-frozen season. DD-ette was the nimble one who crossed the creek to find the container (managing to keep herself dry in the process) while the rest of us stayed on the other side. TN L-Sig Card. It took a few holes and some triangulating, but we got it after a while. The water was clear enough for us to see the symbols and we got the smiley! TNLN since the cache was in below-freezing water. Manistee River Run by DinoDuo

Splendid, absolutely splendid!! The Manistee River Run is my "peak" geocaching experience in this, my geo-rookie summer.  The trip down the river was simply beautiful; fish jumping; a bountiful crop of mallards in evidence all the way; kingfishers darting to and fro over the water; turtles basking in the late summer sun and numerous Great Blue Heron sightings. Wabbit 57 and I had a great time, and managed to find all 10 discs and the final cache. We did make an error early on in our adventure, which required a long stretch of upstream paddling, but we learned our lesson well! We did have the occasional sandbar groundings and logjams, but nothing really bad or dumb. Ok, except for when I darn near lost my life jacket and t-shirt when a moment of inattention resulted in deadfall reaching out its' prickly branches in a failed attempt to make me go topless!

After we found the 10th disc, we paddled over to a marshy area where we could enter the numbers for the final cache coordinates. Hmm, voices, somebody is telling us to just "guess" a number and we'll find that which we seek. We turned around and there, on the opposite shore, sat the DinoDuo. Geesh, they don't look anything like a 2-headed dinosaur! Introductions were made all around and we talked for several minutes. What a pleasure to meet them!

We paddled onwards towards the final cache and success. I was happy to note that the route led us past public facilities for which, after being on the River for about six hours, I was profoundly grateful.

This was a superb experience.  Thank you, DinoDuo, for your great work on this cache and thanks for coming down to greet us. Have a safe trip back home and I hope we have the chance to meet you folks again

YES!!!! We decided this morning to make the two hour trip to Traverse City for two reasons, and yes, one of those reasons was to look again for this cache (and do some others while in the area)!! After two peppermintpatti caches today I picked up Mom WTH up from shopping and we headed to the old state hospital, again. Yup, we have been here before -- looking, searching, and yes, on the edge. Mom WTH even touched it last time we were there! We considered asking for a hint but wanted to be able to say we found it without one, so we attempted it again today -- but this time we succeeded!!! The third time must truly be a charm -- this was our third peppermitpatti cache for the day and this was our third time here searching for this cache!! While we truly enjoy all types of caches, these tend to be our favorites -- the toughies that challenge us in ways that "traditional one-star" caches don't. It feels like such an accomplishment to find the more difficult ones!! TFTC

Camping and caching in the TC area for a few days with Farmboy & the Teacher. Well yesterday while doing a cache Basswoodbend offered us a boat ride out to Power Island..... now that's a no brainer... nice boat ride and the oldest cache in Michigan.
Thank you Basswoodbend. We met up with rathergohiking and The Waypoint Kid and headed to the island.
When we got there only one gpsr had the cache coordinates we soon fixed that. Now off to the cache.
Nice hike to the cache site the terrain was hilly but that didn't stop us. We found the cache easily once there and then headed out for the other cache on the island.
What a great start to our caching day and a lot of fun.

Wabbit57 and I have been wanting to "finish this one up" after, aaah, finding two of its stages while attempting another cache in the area a few weeks ago. Today was highly successful!! We were joined by two muggle friends of mine, Okie Sandy and Arizona Tim, who wandered up and down and across this field with us, shaking their heads at our antics. Wabbit57 made the critical find of the stage that gave us the directions to the final cache. I spotted the cache and the celebration began! This was a lot of fun, but we still need to do some more work on basic orienteering skills! That's all I'm saying!

Even though we ran out of daylight and did not find the cache we really enjoyed it. The stages were spot on...super well done. I have a pocket transit and it was dialed in perfectly (it helps when you really know how to use a compass). It took me directly to each stage when I had to use it. In the end we found 7 stages. That calculation had me a little stymied, but after some thought and some calculations I was pretty sure I found the "Wood" in question (tricky!)...but didn't find a further hint nor the cache. Will email menstown1 for clarification. I'd highly recommend this cache to anybody...it was a great test of skill. We had a ton of fun on this cache!

1740 What an awesome area to hike! Had a big problem with stage 3...mainly one of scale. But we managed to "work it out". We enjoyed the hike and took pictures. Awesome way to place a cache! The combo worked! Took Jeep (just a hot wheels, not a TB). Left a chainmail keychain that I made.
